6 Hottest Prints for Summer 2021

The worst of winter is over, and we know exactly what that means! All eyes are on the next spring season and collection. It wasn’t that long ago that the S/S 20 runways gave us a glimpse of what to expect from the next round of shows. We are extremely happy to have given up our puffer-jackets, heavy overcoats and thick-soled boots. The only thing next on our bucket list is daydreaming about those delicious colours, print and patterns that are about to disrupt the spring runways! From some fresh entries to a few past favourites (gingham, polka dots) to some far-out florals evocative of your grandmothers ‘70s era wallpapers, these prints are about to take over our Instagram feeds for good! But a word of caution for our fellow minimalists, the following list is going to be brimming with eye-catching patterns and a kaleidoscope of patterns. These mind-boggling 2021 spring prints are definitely not for the faint-hearted.
Rainbows in the sky
Are rainbows one of those statement-making S/S 2020 print trends, or did designers just use them because they’re colourful and attractive? It depends largely on the designer but we’ll be happy to wear rainbows all season long, honestly!
At Dior, we loved the flowing dresses that featured vertical rainbow stripes connected by an ombre effect. Paco Rabanne showed us long-sleeved turtleneck covered in horizontal rainbow stripe which was paired with high-waisted khaki trousers. They transported us to a college campus in the ‘70s. There was a similar look at Rokh, a short-sleeved polo shirt with rainbow stripes, styled with fitted, flared trousers.

We love Psychedelic and Florals
Florals might not be groundbreaking for many, but this late ‘60s style has gripped the fashion world by storm. This new take on the print feels arguably refreshing! You will see many groovy cuts like kick-flare pants and boho maxi dresses and mod-like miniskirts. The next season in fashion will be largely dictated by ‘70s era prints like larger than life abstract prints.
It just might be a good time to raid your grandma’s closet for any vintage goodies!
The Tie-Dye
Previously in fall, all these tie-dye prints were feeling a bit off. But for S/S 2020 prints, this is exactly what we need. Despite the fact that the ‘70s are taking over the minds of many designers this year, the way this print was utilized felt completely modern and contemporary.
There were many takes on tie-dye at fashion houses like Dior. This helped to cement this print as the seasons “It-trends”. This included many tie-dyed denim outfits which consisted of all classes of garments including some interesting printed jumpsuits.
This print was also seen in the form of curve-hugging dresses covered in circular patterns.
Pinstripes
This suiting style has sprouted wings of its own. Although we can expect to find a plethora of classic blazers and trousers, what we are waiting for is the barrage of other silhouettes taking over this we-mean-business-only print. Fashion house Sacai added chains and open-toed sandals to this mix to keep the pinstripes from looking too business formal and mixed it up with more casual pieces like colourful sweaters, mesh tees and sneakers.
Embroidered Florals
Embroidered fabrics have created a class of their own within the spring 2021 pattern trends, since they require a high level of craftsmanship that is much harder to replicate when compared to prints. The ruling embroideries we saw this season were gorgeous florals that seem quite fitting for spring.
We worshipped the delicate, natural-looking embroidered florals on cream-colored dresses on the runway. The embroidery technique was amazingly precise, and the choice of spiky and prickly flowers felt significant. Both Comme des Garcons and Dries van Noten presented some glamorous brocade florals as well.
Gingham
This isn't the first time we've been hung up on this print. And it certainly won't be the last. But this time around, you might want to keep the picnic reminiscent versions at bay. This season’s take on the print puts pastels and contrasting cuts at the lead. Whether you want to dress head-to-toe in gingham go for a chic two-piece set, or let it sit in as a subtle, background design element, and definitely don't let this pass up on the trending S/S 2021 print come spring.
