Skinny Jeans: The most popular trend of all time

COVER STORY / 2020-03-04

The Spring-Summer runways came alive with exciting trends for us to look forward to next year. Trends like Bermuda shorts, waistcoats, colourful leather, and ‘60s wallpaper prints were just a few which seemed to stand out. Our eyes were in particular fixated on one thing – that blue denim! This everyday staple had a massive presence on the runway – with every designer from Gucci to Celine to Givenchy showcased the much-loved fabric in a variety of refreshing ways including vintage washed jeans, cropped jeans, and bootcut flares. So if you’ve also been a denim lover then scroll down for some much-loved trends that are going to take over our feed, in our favourite retailers and inevitably in our closets in 2021.

Buttoned Skinny Jeans

While this may seem minimal, the small addition of a visible button fly adds an elegant spin to acid-washed or dark-washed skinny jeans. Our suggestion is to follow suit of this style setter and wear a cropped top or warm sweater or tuck in a figure-hugging sweater to really show off the buttons.

Reconstituted Denim

This new wave of jeans has seen something extraordinary. It has created quite a following of jeans that do not really involve new denim at all. Also known as the “second life denim”, brands are banking on our partiality for custom-made styles and multi-toned designs to create covetable styles from used denim. If Kendall Jenner can be seen sporting this style, so can you! This spliced-together style has really caught on for other brands as well. Environmentally conscious brands are making jeans from old and discarded denim and can produce custom-made styles as well.

Vintage Skinny

Vintage is back, and every cool kid on the block is wearing it. This was a major emphasis on retro-looking, vintage vibes denim on the S/S 20 runways. Jeans were all about the upcycled, lived-in vibe. They seemed like they could have been pulled straight out of a thrift store. If yes, then you nailed the trend.

Skinny Boot cut

Boot cuts are back and how. Thanks to fashion houses like Marc Jacobs, Celine, and Gucci, this leg-lengthening and flared silhouette of denim will definitely make a come back next year. You can opt for a high-waisted pair cinched a the waist with a narrow belt to better accentuate your curves.

Distressed Skinny

Whether you love this trend or hate it, there’s no denying that ripped and distressed jeans will be in the limelight in 2021. You can balance this casual and undone look with a sophisticated high-neck blouse, a fitted t-shirt or a polished, well-stitched blazer.

Split Hem jeans

Recent years have seen the popular jeans style get style-typed by a straight leg and loose fit. More often than not boyfriend jeans have taken precedence over this type from the skinny jean. Although we love this style, slimmer styles have been creeping back into the game for a while now. Not quite with the elastane-infused, ankle hugging appearance that they once exhibited. Maintaining our freshly kindled love for denim, split hem flares are the jeans that will allow breathability without suffocating your legs with elasticated fabrics and will allow for a rock-and-roll boot.

Cropped and Short skinny

Whether it’s Bermuda style long shorts or culottes, shorter hemlines have been all over the runways. You can wear these uber-cool styles with knee-high boots to make a style statement, mules or strappy sandals when the weather warms up a bit.

Jet Black Skinny Jeans

On one end of the spectrum are some light-washed styles that have lived the tried-and-true black skinny jeans. We adore this style because you can pair it up with almost anything – be it a glittering top for a night out, a cropped top for girls or just a sweater that you want to tuck in for a sleek and sophisticated look. Black skinny jeans are literally your answer to everything.

Pleated front jeans

Front pleated are finally having a moment in the limelight in 2021. This new year, you can be sure to spot some pleated goodness on the runway and off it. This style of wearing denim is basically made to tuck in those beautiful chic blouses that you bought for summer. You can wear some cool graphic tee and cinch them at your waist with a belt! Channel some vintage vibes with these front pleated jeans!
