The Hottest Shirt Trends of 2021

COVER STORY / 2021-04-14

Fashion trends come and go, but clothes that feel easy to wear while still looking good, are the real deal. Shirts are one such category of apparel that can instantly uplift your look, as though you made enough effort to plan your outfit. Whether it’s daily Zoom meetings, those few essential errands, the occasional outdoor lunch, weekend brunches, we all could use trendy shirts that make us feel a distinct sense of style and comfort.

Spring-summer 2021 runways saw everything that we missed in 2020, from ’70s-inspired denim to decadent leathers. Designer collections brought us an array of covetable trends to be excited about and inspire to wear all year long. In a changing season like right now, reaffirm the joy of fashion with the trendiest shits of 2021. Comfort is key, as Shirts take the center stage for new-season wardrobes, ideal, both for indoors, and (hopefully) increased time spent outdoors. Stay ahead of the game with our curated list of the SS21 shirt fashion trends to wear right now and beyond.

1. Statement sleeves

Statement sleeves are about to have their moment, after two seasons of being low on the trend charts. Expect to see big-shouldered shirts, 1980s-style short sleeves and shirt sleeves adorned with oversized ruffles. Styles on the rise also include bell and balloon sleeves. The statement sleeve shirt is made to be noticed and therefore, to might just have a little more fun dressing up!

The SS21 collections dialed down the fragile-ness and brought a tougher attitude to this favorite sleeve silhouette. Having said this – The puffed sleeves are edgy, yes, but these sure can be romantic, depending on your styling. Think billowy sleeve shirts in black, for a more fierce look.

2. White Shirt

The White shirt is a classic and really – a no-brainer. When in doubt, wear white basics short or mix this trend with another shirt trend (like puffed sleeves). Few good White shirts in your wardrobe will come to your rescue every time you need to be rescued!

There's no pairing as classic as a white button-down and black pants. To add a zing and do things the 2021 way: experiment. Add scarves, belts, and statement earrings, or play around with layering and pair your favorite white shirt underneath a bodycon black dress.

3. Wide Collared Shirt

Pair a wide-collared shirt with leather pants or shorts, and you'll look polished in seconds. One of the latest micro-trends making some noise on the 'gram right now is larger-than-life collars. SS’21 runways saw plenty of large, pointed collars. The oversized collared shirt can be sleek, as well as frilly or lace-trimmed. This vintage-inspired shirt trend exudes a Victorian vibe that fashion girls and celebrities can't seem to get enough of. The trend was largely spotted in abundance at Chanel's Haute Couture and Ganni shows.

Welcome spring season this year with some big collar energy into our wardrobes. Balance the statement shirt with a pair of simple jeans on the bottom!

4. Organza Shirt

Show off your cutest summer bralettes with an organza shirt this year.  The best way to wear an organza shirt is with a mix of textures. These shirts will look excellent with denim, tucked in and paired with flat sandals. Organza also a fabric that proves to be versatile in terms of styling – wear it buttoned up over a cami, or open like a jacket over a sundress.

Lastly, if total transparency is not your thing, bet your money on a shirt that has organza only on the sleeves. This way you will join the trend without major risks or getting out of your comfort zone!

5. Boyfriend Shirt

The boyfriend shirt needs no introduction. This super comfortable style of shirt has been popular, even if it doesn’t make it officially to trend lists. Lucky for us, this season it has bagged a spot, and it is bigger than ever. For SS21, the mannish button-up gets a feminine spin in the form of shocking-pink hues and delicate white lace. Some designers cropped the classic boyfriend shirt under the bust in a midriff-baring cut that is ideally paired with high-waisted pants or skirts. Stock up on boyfriend shirts this year in nautical prints, muted palette, and gentle A-line silhouette, making it ideal not only for daytime, but a night out as well!

I know we've all been cooped up and mostly wearing pajamas while at home, but sometimes dressing up helps give a sense of normalcy during these tough times.
