Spring/Summer 2021 fashion weeks saw brands getting more creative with their models' makeup looks. Though we are used to seeing decked up beauties strutting down the ramp wearing extravagant makeup looks, this year it expanded to include digital shows, runways without human models, and brands releasing images without a runway at all. The runways have left us with some truly stellar makeup trends to dream about. Showing off the best of the best, this year makeup artists were truly innovative in their presentation. From free-will eyebrows, and chunky eye glitter, to unmistakably sticky lip gloss and the prettiest watercolor eyeshadows – every runway look was playful, and borderline experimental. Needless to say – we are obsessed.
Makeup trends have continued to evolve with time. It seems like many of the 2021 makeup looks gravitate towards – where we are as a society today, after a heck of a year 2020. So it shouldn't come as a big surprise that the makeup trends that you'll be trying in 2021 will skew towards no-makeup dewy skin, focussed around brows, natural looking lash-falsies, colored lashes and eyeshadows. Given that many of us barely left our houses in 2020, and whenever we do, we wear a mask (and we must!) – a move closer to the "no makeup" look makes a lot of sense. 1. Smokey Eyes
Glitter eyeshadows are a thing of the past. The coming year is all about smokey eyeshadow. The sultry smokey eye is set to make your makeup look like fire and this eyeshadow takes, like, half the time to put on. Add a few dots of eye shadow (or kohl for that matter) right above your lash line, then use your finger to blend it up toward your crease. Neon eyeliner was all the rage in 2020, but in 2021, you’re going to see black and brown smokey eyeshadow taking over your Insta feed. This trend is a quick and easy way to add a subtle touch of color to your eyes without going overboard.
2. Bare Face Look
When was the last time you put on a full face of makeup? If your answer is – probably a few months ago – you're not alone. As the world ceases to display uncovered faces due to the pandemic, ‘’Natural faces’’ commanded the catwalks this season, with subtly perfected skin and relaxed eyeshadow. This makeup trend for spring 2021 is all about effortless makeup, that looks like your skin – but better.
3. Natural but glam
Although the runway shows kept makeup on the minimum side, angelic soft blush made an appearance at designers like Erdem, Gucci and Simone Rocha. Blush that looks like it is draped across the apples of models' cheeks – looks flattering yet naturally glam. To balance the look, wear some mascara to get fluttery lashes that keep the looks clean and sweet.
4. Dark Lips
The gothic era was all about dark eye makeup and lips to match. *0s and 90s makeup lovers will be happy to know that 2021 is heralding a resurgence of the dark lip look. Additionally, the era of COVID-19 fueled creators to draw inspiration from the fashion eras that originally sparked their passion. Forget a bold red lip and make a statement with dark plum or chocolate lipstick. If you want your gothic lipcolor to have serious staying power, go for a matte lipstick instead of a creamy one.
5. Popping inner corner
For someone who loves doing the most with their makeup, the popping inner eye trend for 2021 is something to rejoice for. This trend will ensure your IG feed won’t get even a tad tiring. After a morose year, thankfully art is making things fresher. Instead of sweeping a neon shadow over your entire lid, try tapping a neon shade into the corners of your eyes for a quick hint of color. You’ll give off major cool-girl vibes with barely any effort, which is always the goal, right?
6. Brows as you like em
While things went down hill in 2020, so did some of our grooming schedules, and makeup routines. And maybe that’s where designers have picked up the untamed brows as a makeup trend for 2021. That's good news for those of us who haven't been able to get our eyebrows threaded since March of 2020. Think Frida Kahlo meets glam. So don't worry if you can't make it to that eyebrow appointment!
At the same time, solidified clean brows will also be one of the best makeup trends in 2021. If you’ve not invested time and money in brow products – the upcoming season is the right time to do so.
