These 2020 Eyeliner Trends

If there’s one thing that 2020 runways showed us, it’s that if you’re going creative, you better go big or go home. Gone are the days of sticking to catalog looks and trends, as we’re getting bolder with our fashion choices and unafraid to embrace being ourselves.

From 2019 to 2020, bold makeup trends brought us many feelings with the makeup industry taking colors to a whole new level. We saw versatile experiments with bright hues, shimmers and eyeliner trends that were inclusive keeping different skin tones and types in mind. This season, however, makeup artists have taken inspiration from trends of the past with a pinch of salt and an eccentric twist. So, if you want to learn which eyeliner is best for you, here are some of the biggest eyeliner trends in 2020 that we’re soon going to see off the runway too.

Shades of Blue

When Pantone said that the color of the year was going to be Blue, we were all eager to see it manifest in makeup trends 2020. And as expected, we were right! From eyeshadows to metallic blue lipsticks, it was a case of blue all around. We saw blues in all shades and effects, from double eyeliners to single liners and floating liners too. We love it so much that with everything that’s going on, we’re going to stay calm and blue.

Floating Eyeliners & Underliners (sometimes double or triple lines) -

One thing we all noticed with makeup trends in 2020 was that a case of apparent boredom has got everyone up and running. Makeup artists are pushing the boundaries with liners floating way above the eyelid instead of lining just the eye. The negative space effect which leaves a part of the eyelid unpainted pushes the boundaries of eyeliner trends, is bold and carries panache. From Proenza Schouler, Phillip Lim to stars like Shay Mitchell, we’ve seen the best of the suspended or floating eyeliner trend this season.

The Pastel Effect

2019 paved way for another decade of makeup and eyeliner trends that are here to stay, and 2020 is a testament to that. Our love for watercolors has merged with our love for makeup, and truly the pastel and watercolor liner effect is one of the best eyeliner trends this year. Play it soft, playful, and ethereal with the pastel effect eyeliner trend. You can use different hues of the same color, or go bold with multi-colors.

Neon Lines

When Neon became a fashion favorite a few years ago, it came in all forms – nail colors, lipstick shades, eyeshadows, eyeliners and more. Because it’s been done and dusted, it’s easy to think of neon as boring, and hardly creative since it’s a thing of the past. However – hold your horses – because neon has definitely upped several notches! Instead of the single-color winged eyeliner, try mixing up more than one or two neon shades. Go for the floating eyeliner trend, mix it up with neon eyeshadows or just smudge a tad on the corner of your eyes. Either way, neon is in, and we’re loving the way it has made a comeback since the HBO hit series –  Euphoria.

Embellished Eyes

Didn’t we say it was to go big or go home, this season? Embellished and bedazzled eyes are in, and we’re loving the statement eyeliner trend that’s been sported on the runways. From Marni’s glitter bombed eyeliner makeup trend to lacquered strands on eyelids that strutted the runway, we saw designers like Giambattista Balli, Erdem and more using embellished eye adornments among 2020 eyeliner trends.

The full circle

Winged eyeliners have become passe – the full circle or 360 eyeliner trends are back in fashion once again. Except, this time it wasn’t the same old mundane, but rather a new twist on the good-old full circle eyeliner around the eyes. Sport your full circle eyeliner look in different shades, or opt for glimmer and metallic hues for a bolder look. To go even bolder, play it up with multi colors and tones, and generous dabs of eyeshadow.

Times have evolved, and so has the way we choose to do our makeup. I mean, for years women have been told what to do and what to wear, and with the rise of the fashion industry, we’ve seen a steady undoing of such standards. Let this season see the peak of your own individual style, and don’t be afraid to experiment with bolder shades and hues of eyeliners and eyeshadows.
