Cropped Tops are Back and Trending Now, More Than EVER

TREND / 2020-03-25

Crop tops are back, yet again. The best part about crop tops this year is that it has done its time and traveled through that grunge teenage phase and is out in the open in 2019. In other words, the trend has evolved into a fashion-forward, chic look, and is back in vogue to fit the style of even the ‘grown-ups’. But, before we get into the how and why of crop tops in 2021, let’s take a step back into the history of crop-tops.

Did you know that crop tops came into fashion during the sexual revolution of the late 60s & 70s? It has evolved since, but back then many women would cut their own sweatshirts into half in order to get that Flashdance look. It was an instant hit and gained the attention of many. Celebrities like Barbara Eden and Jane Birkin sported the style quite often. Since then, the style has gone through many variations and variant styles, and soon after a newer look with a tied-up or knotted shirt became the perfect summer trend.

Cropped tops have witnessed a giant comeback this season

Coming back to this season, there are many uber-chic ways to style crop tops. We found models strutting their middles and six-packs literally on all major runways. Louis Vuitton had an interesting season with an eclectic rendition of crop zip-up sweatshirts,  jackets with beads &  embellishments. Clearly, we couldn’t get our eyes off the collection. Jonathan Saunders’ fashion show showcased cropped tops with pencil skirts, and Balenciaga had its own sporty yet bold interpretation of the cropped top trend. Truly the trend is back in the best way possible, keeping inclusivity of all shapes and sizes in mind. Spoiled for choices, are we?

For some of us, crop tops can mean working hard on those abs and toned belly, but the whole idea behind the crop tops this year is so strategic that you don’t need to worry about competing with Gigi Hadid or Kendall. When it comes to giving the illusion of abs, show off only an inch or two of your stomach. With chopped tops, you can do just as much, easily! If you’re even slightly considering the trend, we say go for it. Go bold, go fashion-forward, and know that there are more than enough styles to flatter any body type.

Break the stereotypes with crop top styles for all ages, sizes & shapes

This season will change how you used to wear your crop tops in your 20s and 30s to more fashionable, and chic grown-up looks. Since the crop top trend is back to iterate – there’s truly no age limit to wearing it. Wondering how to wear crop tops this season? Uhm, if Jennifer Lopez can pull off the crop top look in her fifties, you can too! And if you’re worried about getting that perfectly toned stomach – don’t be. Crop tops truly have become friendlier as they come in different styles to suit different body types.

It doesn’t matter the age or body-shape, Summer is the perfect time to strut out in those trending cropped tops, so don’t forget to get in on the trend this season!

Here are some of our favorite fashionistas parading the cropped top trend

One of the best things about the return of cropped tops has been that it’s just in tandem with the new wave of athleisure that seems to have taken over many of us today. So for those who’ve worked hard in the gym, or do pilates or yoga, it’s time to show off those abs! And what better way to do that than in a cropped top?
