COVER STORY / 2020-11-10

The season to wear warm clothes is here! Get ready to shop for jackets, coats and all sorts of outerwear because tis’ the season of extra cuteness and coziness. But, what are the biggest coat trends for Fall-Winter 2020/2021? What's new this year? Last year in 2020, the ideal trendy winter wardrobe ranged from bourgeois styles to sustainable pieces. While 2020 hasn’t been what most of us expected, the trends live on. Spoiler alert: the ultra-realistic faux fur that was a firm favorite last year, continues to be at the forefront of Fall-Winter 2021 trends this season.

Moving on, 2021 coats and jacket trends are simply too gorgeous and edgy at the same time. Jackets are versatile, and this makes wearing adapting to these new trends ridiculously penny-worthy. Whether you like to wear statement pieces that stand out in a crowd (LOL, remember those?) or jackets that easily pair with half of your wardrobe, you won’t be disappointed with these seven cozy jacket trends. You can pair them with your favorite jeans and high-neck sweaters or with plaid mini skirts and ribbed t-shirts. However you style your outerwear this season, you’re still sure to get plenty of use out of all these adorable jacket trends.

1. Leather Weather

Consider leather and PU jackets a go-to for winter 2021. You can pair this evergreen trend with just about anything – from a flared midi dress and sneaker boots  to high-waisted black jeans and pumps. This season, dare to go a little bold and test new waters with the leather jacket. Try new looks and unique pairings, like wearing a black leather jacket with an all-white outfit for a biker-chic monochrome look.

2. Sterling Shearling

Whether it’s sherpa accents on a denim jacket or a shearling coat, this 2021 jacket trend was practically made for cooler weather. If you’re not sure how you feel about the trend, there are so many easy ways to wear it without going too bold. Try a jacket with simple shearling details to start. On the other hand, if you’d rather go big, you can always try a sherpa coat for maximum coziness this fall.

3. Faux fur is the new fur

Artificial fur is more than a trend, obviously. It’s a statement, it’s a way to express yourself and your style. Artificial or Faux furs with bourgeois accents and a wild twist on the other are hugely popular already. This striking mix of genres is chic yet cozy, as well as being a celebration of modern femininity.

4. Houndstooth is back

Fashion gurus seem to have a love and hate relationship with the Houndstooth print. This is one trend that is very particularly defined and restrictive in the nature, but keeps coming back to the trend charts every other year. This year, Houndstooth is back! So you might wanna pull out your Houndstooth collection, coz chances are, you already might have a couple of retro pieces. Yet, refresh your Houndstooth collection with ultra-chic silhouettes this year. When worn from head-to-toe, houndstooth makes a bold first impression and brings a blend of retro spirit, androgynous allure and contrasting forms to the silhouette.

5. Yellow coats, jackets, and bombers

Sunshine yellow is having a moment since summer 2020. It's predicted to be one of spring 2021’s most popular shades as well. The good news is, you don't need to wait for the warmer weather to wear this warm, bright hue. Yellow coats are in big-time for fall-winter 2020. Unleash your inner glow goddess and style maven with a bold choice of a yellow coat.

6. Corduroy

Corduroy is one of fall and winter’s favorite fabrics, because of its thickness and hence functionality quotient. So, it’s no wonder that along with corduroy pants and skirts, it’s also trending in jacket form this year. This trend is perfect for keep things both cute and casual all season long. You can go with a corduroy jacket, high-neck graphic tee and high-waisted jeans. There’s no wrong way to wear this jacket, so don’t be afraid to go for it.

7. Power shoulders

Volume in shoulders is a key aspect of the power shoulders trend this season, with square shoulders extending and giving all the Boss-girl feels. This trend draws inspiration from architectural forms, conceptual moods and triumphant 1980s fashion.

8. Statement trench

The humble trench coat was given an update this year when designers began swapping its traditionally beige color palette for a range of different colors – from pastels to rainbow brights. Evidently, the fashion set has embraced the update, as colorful trench coats were seen all over the major fashion shows of FW2020.

We are finally at the end of this trend edit. Seeing as we’ll all be wearing coats and jackets daily since around mid November, it’s time for a whole host of interesting outerwear.
