SS21 Trend Alert: Polka Dots Have Made A Comeback

TREND / 2020-03-18

From Lady Diana and Miranda Priestly to Marilyn Monroe’s itsy bitsy, dotted bikini, the ‘polka dots print’ has turned heads since fashion immemorial. Once again this year, an obstinate and uber familiar print style to walk down SS20 runways was the polka dots trend, and we aren’t complaining. We’ve loved shuffling through the pages of the history of polka dots in fashion, to having them as a fashion-favorite, but what we love the most, is how polka dots clothes truly never go out of style. They’re simple and understated, yet bold and over the top.

This year, speckle prints are trending just as much as they were in 2019. Right from Balenciaga to Gucci and Dries Van Noten, it was a spectacular polka dot outfit galore at the SS20 runways.  Wondering how to wear polka dots in the new year? Get in on these summer outfit ideas which are absolute must-haves right now.

Polka Dots at SS20 Fashion Week

Rodarte’s SS20 featured clothes that make for a bold choice and are instantly identifiable as preppy, flirtatious, exuberant and happy-go-lucky. One of the reasons that the designer’s rendition of the polka dots might turn out to be a new fashion favorite is its simple styling and variety of colors that leave you having to do pretty much nothing. It is self-sufficient and currently trending because the print and the vintage silhouettes do their own talking.

Richard Quinn

Richard Quinn’s show for SS20 was a win-win for all. Not only was the collection rich with polka dots outfits and bold &  beautiful prints, but there were eclectic hues that will soon coat your memories of fashion week 2020. The one print trend that stood out among the giant paisleys, daisies, and garish clashes of oversized prints and colors, was the collection’s larger than life polka dots design patterns.

Your polka dots outfits can be as relaxed, comfortable, and can double/ triple up as an indoors or outdoors outfit, or even formal or casual attire. For those fearless fashionistas who’ve tried and tested polka dots in all their forms, these red polka dots prints will come as a refreshing change in your fashion choices this season.

Caroline Constas

Caroline Constas never fails to surprise us with her sartorial sense in fashion. Constas seems to have hit fashion heaven with her collection of dreamy polka dots in ethereal hues. Her twist on polka dots outfits is by far our favorite. The upbeat colors truly made SS20 runway trends all the more fun.

Wear your polka dots outfit to the beach or out shopping with friends, or dress it up to a formal event. Either way, you’re spoiled for choices. Shop from our range of polka dots outfits that are not just trending, but can turn up the heat on any day.

Balmain

Balmain had something special in-store with their SS20 collection. We found a mix of oversized sleeves and quirky silhouettes in the collection that carried the polka dots trend in all sizes and colors, screaming of ‘go big or go home’.

Carolina Herrera

Polka dots have not only taken over clothes but this season, they’re reigning on handbags, shoes and other accessories too. Having drawn his inspiration from the blooming phenomenon of the California super bloom, Wes Gordon, the creative director of Carolina Herrera has successfully brought his vision of youthful exuberance and drama with the SS20 collection.

If you aren’t one for the bold prints, play it safe with smaller polka dots that aren’t too loud or garish. Be it a sunny day or a cool wintry day, one can never go wrong with a polka dots outfit. Here are some of our favorite polka dots outfits.

Sacai

This Japanese luxury brand’s rendition of the trending polka dots prints is exciting and this further goes on to say that the print has made another comeback on the SS20 runways. It’s interesting to know that polka dots first entered fashion with the 1857 issue of women’s lifestyle magazine called Godey’s Lady’s Book. Back then it was an advertisement for a red muslin scarf, and all heads stopped and turned to look. People didn’t simply ‘like’ the polka dots print then, there was something about it that left a mark and it leaves a mark even today. That’s what we feel about Sacai and the return of the polka dots trend with the SS20 collection. With prints that are both dainty and quirky, having eclectic shades and bold polka dots, Sacai’s polka dot game is on point.

With SS20 rich in bold patterns and florals and gradient hues, make sure to add some flirty polka dots prints to your spring-summer wardrobe. From tops, skirts and maxi dresses to, blazers, scarves, handbags, footwear and more, one would think the world is all polka dots.
