5 Denim trends that are SO IN for SS'2021

COVER STORY / 2021-03-03

Denim and American fashion have been inherently linked. This connection dates back as far as the 19th century. Whether you’re a hardcore denim fan who wears jeans with every outfit or just likes to keep up with new spring-summer collections, this trend round-up is here to help. We also got peeks into what denim looks high-end brands like Balmain are giving us for 2021.

Hint: they’re anything but boring. Classic skinnies and ankle jeans are always going to stay in, but designers have taken the denim cult favorites a step further this year. Moreover, there are ways to wear each and every trend differently, so you can go ahead and stay one step ahead of everyone else. If you are curious to see what the 2021 jeans trends have in store for us all, though, keep reading. We scoured the runways to get you the scoop on all things denim for SS’21.

1. High-Waisted Baggy Cargo Jean

Since last year, we all have gotten into the habit of wearing comfy lounge-wear day and night. High-waisted, Baggy jeans are the perfect trend for transitioning out of your loungewear, since these are both spacious and airy like your favorite pair of sweats. Available in multiple silhouettes and at just about any retailer, baggy denim in 2021 is also a showstopper. Pair these with pointed, structured shoes and form fitting tops for a casual yet preppy look.

2. Flared Jeans

'70s-style bell bottoms are making a serious comeback. Wearing them is one of the easiest ways to create a polished look. Pair them with either a cable knit tank top, or a breezy blouse to channel your inner bohemian queen. Complete the look with a clog or platform boot. A lot of the styles come in stretch denim, too, so if rigid denim just is not for you, you're in luck.

3. Biodegradable Denim

As much as we love jeans, a lot of us aren’t actively aware of how damaging it can be to the environment. Excessive water usage and toxic dyes are just a few of denim's negative side effects. Some responsible denim companies, like Stella Mccartnery, are experimenting with developing biodegradable denim now. Made completely of plant-based materials, this sustainable denim gives back to the environment by breaking down post-use and releasing nutrients into the soul. Biodegradable denim is great because it shrinks your waste footprint and oh, it looks good too.

4. Pleated '80s Denim

Pleated high-rise jeans are a blissful ode to the '80s. These jeans are a sleeker, and more stylized take on the mom jeans. Spotted on celebrities like Chrissy Teigen, Hailey Bieber, and more,tThey can be easily paired with turtlenecks for winter and fitted tanks or plain muscle tees for hotter months. If you really want to go all out '80s, opt for acid wash pleated jeans.

5. Undone hemline

Frayed edges on denims look as chic as ruffles look on tops. These jeans are the perfect marriage between too cool for school and barely trying. This trend is a statement maker that beautifully emphasizes winter boots as well as summer sneakers.
