Italian-Haitian designer Stella Jean has found the perfect medium for her message – high-fashion.
The native Roman was first exposed to the fashion world as a model for Egon von Fürstenberg, where
she quickly witnessed the potential to communicate through clothes. She turned to design shortly
after, debuting her first collection at Milan Fashion Week in 2012. By 2013, the self-taught
emerging designer had been handpicked in an unprecedented move as Giorgio Armani’s personal protégé.

and fair-trade production. Tribal prints, ethnic textiles and natural dye techniques are impeccably
tailored in modern, sophisticated silhouettes, reflecting her commitment to both ethics and fashion that’s
established the identity of her growing eponymous label.

Stella Jean is a fair trade and ethical clothing brands, which doesn’t shy away from the heavy stuff. Known for her focus on heritage – usually her own, an infusion of Creole and Italian – this season takes a more political stance. Jean explores the complicated history of Russian/American relations, from the Cold War to present day, through the medium of high-fashion with her Fall/Winter ’17 collection. Folk-inspired prints, pastoral embroidered motifs, woven tapestries, dense faux furs and military medals revive an old-world view in a modern, stylized context that provokes conversation on the deeper meaning. Traditional shapes like the sarafan and peasant skirt get interrupted with hyper design details for a result that’s both tense and graceful. Bold clashes of color expose Stella Jean’s signature optimism, inviting a cherished warmth to the collection’s wintry, wartime backdrop.
