Spring 2021 Trends: Fashion looks you need to own

COVER STORY / 2020-01-08

Just a few months ago, we were mourning the loss of summer and rediscovering our fondness for a roll-neck, along came fashion week to indulge us in a whole new whirl of drool-worthy fair-weather pieces as brands showcased their spring/summer 2021 collections. And just how fast does time fly? 2021 already? We’re already 2 decades into this century – And we tell you just how to style it!

If you’re planning on wearing tactical layers, think of roll necks beneath a floral dress layered beneath an oversized coat. If this is failing to excite you this season, why not start daydreaming about what you'll be kitting yourself out in once winter is over? Just kidding. Other than the obvious fur coats, thigh-high boots and layered clothes – you'll also be wearing low-slung tailoring, puffed shoulders, and will be playing around with your lingerie as clothing. Now that we’re in the middle of winter, it might just be a good time to try and understand how your spring will look like.

Worry not, because we bring to you the most happening pre-trends of 2021!

1. Lingerie as clothing

Believe it or not, next season we'll all be a whole lot sexier and racier. While this year saw the brief resurgence of the exposed thong, next spring-summer is all about detailing around the brazier. From exposed bras to sequin accentuation we'll see you and your undies next season.

Designers Christopher Kane, Mark Fast, and JW Anderson showcased similar looks at their fashion week.

2. Round and round your ankles

If you've been keeping an eye on street style over the last couple of months, you must have noticed that several designers have been tying their sandal straps around their trousers. Not a fleeting trend though, forecasts have suggested this look will be lapped up next spring-summer. Designer JW Anderson and Toga showcased similar looks.

3. Draw the strings

Definitely not a new phenomenon, the drawstring trend was all over the spring/summer 2021 runway. Whether sitting at the top of shorts, at the waist of your jackets or, well wherever it is that you wanted it. Designers Philip Lim and Ashish sported similar styles in their designs.

4. Leather - but make it metallic

This bold trend was seen on trenches, across trousers, and even dabbled all over bags, metallic hues (mostly silver) which were everywhere on the SS20 catwalk. We'd suggest keeping the rest of your look relatively neutral to allow the piece to really pop out!

5. Layer it up with Sheer

If the aforementioned visible lingerie was too much for you, why not experiment with a risqué aesthetic via sheer fabrics? Whether you layer a sheer shirt on top of a vest or go all out with a sheer dress, it's a great way to play with silhouettes and textures! Don’t be afraid to experiment with colours either!

So all you fashion aficionado’s – here’s your chance to tap on the hottest trends of the upcoming spring-summer season as seen on the runways. You better hop on to this bandwagon and get these looks, cause all the insta-worthy looks are going to be based around this! Good luck !
