From Chicago Art Studios to New York’s Runways: A Fearless Beginning
Cynthia Rowley graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1981, where she first approached fashion as an extension of her art practice. Armed with just a few handmade pieces, she moved to New York, determined to carve her own path. Despite the early struggles of launching an independent label in a competitive city, Rowley’s fearless mix of painting-inspired textiles and playful silhouettes quickly caught the attention of editors and buyers. Her breakthrough was rooted in breaking rules—proving that clothing can be functional, beautiful, and joyful all at once.
