Going With The Classics

Technology, Fashion & The Power Women

Going with the classics makes looking polished everyday an easier task. When you are not worried about how a new trend looks on you, your “fashion day” falls into place. Think crisp or flowing shirts, tailored pants, a nice clean pair of ladies’ leather sneakers or boat shoes, jeans, cashmere sweaters, beautiful patterned silk scarves and boyfriend jackets. Actually, the key operating term this season is “boyfriend jacket.”

You really can never go wrong with a BF jacket—you can toss one over anything and you instantly look polished and pulled together. The key is to have several jackets that leave room for a layered look underneath and one that is more fitted that will let you show off a tailored button-down business shirt or feminine silk blouse underneath. Don’t forget to throw a dressier blazer that can take an office ensemble from day to night into your boyfriend jacket rotation. A silk scarf that you can wear around your neck or your bag is great to spice things up when you are starting to feel that you need a dramatic dash of color. A great choice is the Karen Walker Small Flames Scarf currently available on ifchic.com.

Boyfriend jackets with both jeans and classic wool pants seem to be abundant in the New York streets for fall. This is a pleasant change from the athleisure wear trend of the past few years. The real beauty is that boyfriend jackets can be teamed with ANYTHING. The Fall 2017 runways were full of the “mismatched” look!

The blouse story for fall features a lot of classic looks but some feature bold geometric prints that can add an element of fun. Putting a geometric or print blouse under a power suit—a strong Fall 2017 trend—lightens things up a bit and brings in an “edge.” Dresses on the runway at the NYFW Fall ’17 shoes seemed to almost take on a Mad Men vintage 50s silhouette and they were worn with minimal accessories—just a great pair of pumps and simple earrings.

In the fall shoe story, classic loafers are in abundance and can be teamed up with nearly anything. It’s wonderful how many designers have done a twist on loafers for Fall 2017 and added a touch of whimsy here in there with metal details and even clear stacked heels. If you’re someone who lives in flats, there are now many boat shoe-inspired styles that put an interesting twist on the prep school look. Faux fur seems to be penetrating both the heel and flat markets and while it is most likely a trend-of-the-moment, it looks great when the rest of your ensemble is more subdued. Bold leather boots that fold or slouch as well as thigh-high suede boots seem to be the trend for winter—but remember that a classic riding boot will get you through this season with comfort and have a better “closet life,” too!
